Stress spreads breast cancer
Sep 23rd
Hallelujah Acres has long advocated stress reduction for people battling cancer, but a new study from UCLA’s Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Center shows exactly how stress can actually cause cancer (breast cancer in particular) to spread.
The researchers found that stress promotes proliferation of breast cancer cells in mice. In fact, there was a 30-fold increase in cancer progression in the bodies of stressed mice when compared to those that were not stressed.
In a story published by PsychCentral.com, researchers said, “What we showed for the first time is that chronic stress causes cancer cells to escape from the primary tumor and colonize distant organs. We not only showed that this happens, but we showed how stress talks to the tumor and helps it to spread.”
The study concludes by recommending “healthy lifestyle factors to reduce stress” which “may also have influence on these biological pathways.”
Elimination of stress, increased exercise, getting sunshine , and using supplementation to augment an aggressive juicing regimen are all part of an emergency immune boosting program we call The Hallelujah Recovery Diet. For more information, read page 26 in our current issue of Hallelujah Acres Health News magazine, which you can download here.

Healthy eating still in the minority
Sep 21st
Diet-wise, if no one else is eating the way you do, you’re probably doing something right! A report released by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) earlier this month showed that only about 26 percent of Americans ate vegetables three or more times a day, the same as in 2000.
No state met federal goals of three-quarters of Americans eating enough fruit, and half eating enough vegetables. California ate the most fruit and Tennessee was best with vegetables. Oklahoma was at the bottom for fruit and South Dakota had the lowest vegetable consumption.
Furthermore, it seems that even among those who are trying to eat “healthier” are not going about it the right way. Orange juice was the number one “fruit” and potatoes the number one vegetable – both of which are not ideal.
If you’re eating dark, leafy greens, making green smoothies and juicing vegetables daily, you’re definitely going to be viewed as strange – but you’re on the right track!

Do popular people get the flu first?
Sep 16th
Now that everyone has been back to school for a few weeks, germ swapping is rampant and parents are clamoring to keep their kids healthy!
It stands to reason that the more contact a person has with others, the more susceptible that person would be to various illnesses. A new study is investigating this theory and has found that those at the center of social networks may catch the flu before their friends do.
The study had Harvard graduates name their friends. The names were cross-referenced and those who were named at least once were put in a special category. As it turns out, people in that “popular” category contracted the flu an average of 14 days earlier than those not in the category. Furthermore, the epidemic peaked 46 days in the popular category before it peaked in the general population.
In the past several years, the researchers have published similar studies on obesity, alcohol consumption, smoking, depression, happiness, and loneliness.
Popular or not, a strong immune system – including a junk-free diet – is your best defense!

Study shows antibiotics alter gut bacteria
Sep 14th
While a study earlier this week found that 85% of people wash their hands after visiting the restroom, another study is heralding the importance of “good germs.”
Researchers at the Stanford University School of Medicine have found that repeated use of ciprofloxacin (Cipro), an antibiotic prescribed for intestinal, urinary and systemic infections, induces cumulative and persistent changes in beneficial gut bacteria.
“By one week after the end of each course, [microbial] communities began to return to their initial state, but the return was often incomplete,” the researchers wrote. “The human distal gut is one of the most complex ecosystems on the planet.” Regularly wiping out the body’s bacterial population [with antibiotics] could also be helping drive the rapid spread of drug-resistant superbugs.
At Hallelujah Acres, we have found that many people also have very low amounts of beneficial bacteria in their intestinal tracts due to poor eating habits. Research shows that aggressive supplementation may be able to turn this around.

B vitamin pill fights Alzheimer’s study shows
Sep 9th
A new study has shown that vitamins B6, B9 (folic acid) and B12 fights the onset of Alzheimer’s disease.
Working with colleagues in Norway, a team from Oxford University recruited 270 seniors suffering from memory lapses that can be a precursor to Alzheimer’s, and gave them a supplement containing high levels of vitamins B6, B9, and B12 — incidentally, this is the same combination of B-vitamins in Hallelujah Acres’ “B6-B12-Folic Acid” supplement.
Brain scans were done to test whether the supplement reduced brain shrinkage that occurs as we age, which speeds memory loss. Vitamin B cut the amount of shrinkage by 30 percent, on average.
Co-researcher Prof. Helga Refsum added: “Here we have a very simple solution: you give some vitamins and you seem to protect the brain.”
Go figure. Vitamins protect the body – who would have ever guessed that one?
Now, as encouraging as this “discovery” is, the use of B vitamins for brain-related disorders is nothing new. B vitamins been used by nutritionally minded practitioners to alleviate the symptoms of schizophrenia, depression, and learning disabilities for decades. However, the fact that the mainstream medicine sees the potential for B vitamins in conjunction with or instead of dementia drugs is exciting indeed!

Non-stick cookware may increase cholesterol
Sep 7th
It’s just another example of why doing things as natural as possible is better. Researchers at the West Virginia University School of Medicine have found that chemicals used to make non-stick cookware may raise blood cholesterol levels in children.
The children who took part in the study had been exposed to perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) in their water supply for at least a year. PFOA concentrations were found to be substantially higher in these kids than those found nationally in kids — 29.3 ng/mL for the study group and 3.9 ng/mL for the others. Kids with higher PFOA levels had higher total cholesterol.
Surprisingly, few studies have been conducted regarding long-term exposure to perfluoroalkyl acids and how they might affect human health and development.
The findings are somewhat inconclusive, however, since the amount of chemical used to make non-stick cookware is much less than what these children were exposed to in their water supply.
In reaction to the study, Cathy Ross of the British Heart Foundation made a good point, noting that children’s heart health was at greater risk from what goes into the frying pan and from an increasingly inactive lifestyle than from what the lining of the frying pan is made of.
Amen, Cathy!
Study proves organic is better
Sep 2nd
It’s not your imagination after all… A new study has shown that organic food really DOES taste better, in addition to containing more beneficial nutrients.
A new study by Washington State University compared organic strawberry farms to conventionally produced strawberry farms and found that the organic farms “produced higher quality fruit and that their higher quality soils may have greater microbial functional capability and resilience to stress.”
The result is better tasting, more nutritious fruit. The study showed that organic strawberries had about 10 percent more antioxidants, ascorbic acid, and phenolic compounds than conventionally grown berries. They also contained about 10 percent less water, accounting for a sweeter flavor and for longer shelf life.
Conventionally grown strawberries are particularly infamous for their pesticide retention. The Environmental Working Group produces an annual list of the foods that contain the most pesticides, and conventionally grown strawberries are the third worst on the list.
The lead researcher was quoted, “All of a sudden, we have research that shows that organic delivers better nutrition, more dry matter and a better shelf life. That’s pretty amazing.”
Amazing indeed! That’s the power of foods that are grown the way God intended.
First plants, now GM… fish?
Aug 31st
As if enough stir wasn’t created by the discovery of “escaped” genetically modified (GM) canola in a rural parking lot earlier this summer, now there’s talk of the FDA considering GM fish.
Growth hormones have been used for years, but this marks the first time a true GM animal would be available for human consumption. The fish grows twice as fast as natural Atlantic salmon.
Side effects from eating such fish are unknown. If given the green light, the salmon could be followed by GM trout and tilapia. Other scientists are also developing altered pigs and cows for food.
The announcement blatantly disregards a United Nations report in June 2010 warning that “a substantial worldwide diet change away from animal products” is the only sustainable way to feed the world past the year 2050. Apparently science has not learned its lesson from the disastrous effects of GMO plants. Creating GMO fish is just asking for trouble.
Obviously Hallelujah Acres tends to agree with the United Nations on this one. Eat plants (non-GMO, of course) and be a part of the solution!

Diabetes/diet link to Alzheimer’s
Aug 26th
A Japanese research team has revealed an interesting link between Type-2 diabetes and changes in the brain that can lead to Alzheimer’s disease.
The researchers said signs of Type-2 diabetes (such as insulin resistance) may contribute to the formation of neuritic plaques, disrupting signaling within and between brain cells. At this point, the symptoms of dementia might begin to become evident.
Type-2 diabetes is most often a diet-induced condition and is often directly related to obesity. Hallelujah Acres has encountered many, many people who have told us that their symptoms of Type-2 diabetes have drastically diminished or simply disappeared after reducing or eliminating their intake of processed foods and switching to a primarily raw, plant-based diet… which, apparently, has more benefits than we realize.
In fact, study researcher Kensuke Sasaki, MD, PhD said, “It’s possible that by controlling or preventing diabetes, we might also be helping to prevent Alzheimer’s disease.”
It also well known that heart attack, stroke, blindness, amputation, and kidney failure can also happen when blood sugar, blood pressure, and cholesterol are out of control.
Soda ban part 2: Canada years ahead
Aug 24th
On August 17, we posted a blog about California’s new ban on sugary sodas in schools. In response to that blog, someone asked us, “What about artificial sweetened drinks? Shouldn’t they be banned too?” She went on to explain that her nephew delivers soft drinks to schools and noted that business is booming because the company is still allowed to deliver drinks sweetened with aspartame and Splenda! Obviously, this is not an improvement.
It appears that America has a long way to go in this regard, but Canada has been doing something about it for years! In 2005, the government of the Canadian province of British Columbia (BC) let PARENTS decide whether artificially sweetened soft drinks should be allowed in schools. The parents’ (and educators’) “broadly expressed desire” to eliminate these soft drinks led to the outright ban of ALL artificially sweetened foods in BC elementary and middle schools (such foods are still allowed in secondary schools under a “Choose Sometimes” category in the food guidelines for students).
Note that the decision was left to the PARENTS! This is a perfect of example of how personal responsibility can lead to widespread change. If you’re on The Hallelujah Diet and you know the importance of staying away from artificial sweeteners, tell your neighbors who are in the dark, and more importantly, tell your school board! It worked in BC and it could work in your state.
